Introduction:

It would help you to read my index page first, so you understand what lead me to here.
If you are not a geocacher, you may need to look at my Geocaching page.
On the other hand, if you have great tips to share, Email me please (humans only).

This page is about Geocaching software for Android. Basically, for my use here, there are 2 kinds. I'll call them Tools and Receivers, just to give them a title. Receivers are the software you use to hunt down a Geocache. Tools are useful but do not contain what you would normally use for a hard-to-find Geocache.

Tools

FizzyCalc

NOT yet written for Android! - Free
Not for use while Geocaching. It's a tool for Lat-Long.
Developer is FizzyCalc
FizzyCalc is a Windows application that allows simple conversion of coordinates to various formats. It takes coordinate strings in a variety of formats and generates copy-and-paste versions of those coordinates in a variety of other formats. It also does high-accuracy distance calculations and projections using the Vincenty method for calculating distances on an ellipsoid. These caculations are much better than you can obtain from your GPS unit or most other software out there.

GPS Status

All Apps > Travel > GPS Status - Free
Developer is eclipsim.com with How-to-use info. app brain info
Not really for Geocaching, this app is just a GPS display.

Compass:

All Apps > Tools > Compass - Free
Developer is Snaptic. app brain info
A cool tool, but does not display anything for Geocaching, except the compass. Not a GPSr.

Google Maps:

All Apps > Travel > Google Maps - Free
Developer is Google. app brain info
Another cool tool to supplement your caching tool bag, but not a GPSr.

GPS widget:

All Apps > Tools > GPS widget - Free
Developer is STI. app brain info
A screen widget useful to turn your GPSr on or off to save battery life. I can do the same thing with Menu > Settings > Location > Use GPS satellites; but find this widget to be a good time saver.

Receivers

Official Geocache App

All Apps > Entertainment > Geocaching - $9.99
Developer is Groundspeak Inc.. The Grand-Daddy of apps, we wished for. To bad it does not live up to expectations! Don't waste your $10! app brain info
The Version 1.0.1 update of 08/24/2010 fixed my forced close issue.
I ran a test on Oct. 1st, 2010 to see which of several apps could best find a cache on the fly (in the field). Running this test on the Groundspeak app, I found it was easy to find a new cache to seek, and fast, but did poor rendering of cache description graphics.
More words later, if I ever use it much. Or contact me if you want more words.

GCDroid

All Apps > Sports > GCDroid beta - Free
Developer is shyrtol.se with a Manual to Download. (What ???) app brain info
So far, this is my favorite. I do expect to find something better and if I do, of course I'll report it here, ASAP.
I ran a test on Oct. 1st, 2010 to see which of several apps could best find a cache on the fly (in the field). Running this test on the GCDroid app, I found it was easy to figure out how to find a new cache to find but to do so, it uses the web browser.
More words later, as I find time.

GeoBeagle

All Apps > Entertainment > GeoBeagle: Geocaching - Free
Developer is /p/geobeagle/ shows FAQ. This is the successor to the app called GeoBrowse. app brain info
Here is a tutorial on Cacheopedia by Brian Thomas.
The androidguys wrote a review.

c:geo doesn't require web browser nor exports. Coming soon: Trackables, Import Pocket Queries. Kansasdale likes this one on his Droid X.
I ran a test on Oct. 1st, 2010 to see which of several apps could best find a cache on the fly (in the field). Running this test on the c:geo app, I found it was easy to find a new cache to seek but slow to load.
More words later, as I find time.

A new beginning:

Life gets in the way of Geocaching. You can read this also to say that my brain works faster than my keyboard. I have lots of ideas, but little time to implement them. On the off chance that one of my ideas is a really good one, I offer some of them here, so that you or others can benefit.

I've been thinking of how to rank Geocaching software. You know, what is really important for me to tell you. So here are my half baked ideas:

List of features on Android GPSr’s for review use:

Cost - Free, Pay, or a loss leader to get you to pay (not the same as free).

Pre-hunt Planning: Get direct cache details with a web interface. Download using a web browser on your smart phone. Import from PC? Support for zipped PQ’s. Your own edited gpx. Uses current location to query geocaching.com?

On the hunting trip: Type of Display: Radar, compass, other. How does it show the cache description? In app or in a browser? Just text, images; show daughter waypoints, hint decoder?

You found one; how about another? Is it easy to search for another cache from the field?

After hunt: direct upload of finds. How automated is this function? Scripted? Use cell phone, browser in the phone or is the process hidden from discovery? Can you record field notes at GZ without cell reception and later upload thru cell or port thru a PC?
